Before you need aeromedical services

Long before it becomes necessary to seek out air transport services - when a vacation is still in the planning stages - one should consider some basic health vacation preparedness to insure a safe trip. It is common for an individual to fall ill from bacteria in food and water that he is not accustomed to, or to suffer the same everyday maladies that might occur at home. For these reasons, a basic first aid kit should include items such as common pain relievers, antidiarrheal medicines, antihistamines and decongestants, laxatives, motion sickness medications, antiseptics and of course, any daily personal medications that must be taken. (After all, there is a great deal of territory between caring for a laceration and calling for aeromedical services!) Important note: Before packing any first aid or drug kit, be sure to get familiar with the laws of the destination country. It is important not to attempt to carry drugs that may be considered contraband into the airport.

Precursors to medical air transportation

Most young, healthy individuals are at very little risk of ever needing aeromedical services when traveling abroad, especially if they travel prudently, exercise common sense and adhere to basic safety standards. However, there are instances in which it may be wise to inquire about supplemental insurance specifically for travel purposes. For example, a policy that would cover the costs of emergency care, repatriation and medical air transportation might be a good idea for individuals who suffer a chronic or terminal health condition, people who plan to be in country for longer than average and those whose vacation involves risky activities such as skydiving or speedboating.

When air transport services count

In the event of a serious health emergency or physical injury abroad, contact a United States consular official for help identifying health care and emergency services such as medical air transportation. (Tourists should gather the appropriate telephone numbers in advance and keep them ready at all times during their travel.) This consular officer can also assist in contacting family or friends back home. In order to expedite the process, a travel may wish to gather some of these resources themselves so that they can have quick access to care providers they feel they can trust, such as Global Life Flight air transport services.
